Made us cry, laugh, sad. I wish that the father would be alive see his sons getting along with each other

Fun movie....But Geographically InaccurateReviewed bychevolekVote: 5/10

It′s not a great movie, but it′s a fun movie to watch even with its plot holes. Good music, good acting mostly by the main mexican actor Luis Gerardo Mendez (from a greater mexican comedy "Nosotros los Nobles" -We the Nobles- which I truly recommend). The biggest mistake in this movie and as most Hollywood movies failed to do is the lack of accuracy about where America is and who Americans are.America and Americans are the 2 most misused words in the english language. Most U.S. citizens don′t even know that America is Not a country but a Continent with over 35 American countries in it and that makes them sound as awfully ignorant not knowing it.In this movie a mexican character (played by an Honduran actor) living in Mexico says in spanish "Cuando regrese (When I get back...)" and the english subtitles read "When I get back from America...", well guess what Producers/Director: He IS already in America. Mexico is IN America!! Mexicans ARE Americans also!!The main mexican character Renato also talks about U.S. citizens referring to them as Americans when he is one himself and that same America and American(s) mistake repeats itself a lot in the movie specially in the beginning. It does show some ugly truth though, when Renato says in english "Maybe you guys should learn another language" (meaning spanish) because in reality most U.S. citizens when they go to vacation in Mexico they expect mexicans to speak english instead of them learning at least the basics. And this happens also when they travel to other countries (Europe, Asia, etc).Connor Del Rio the other main character born in the United States (OF America, Duh!) does a good performance even though at the beginning might be a little annoying (sometimes it reminded me of actor Zach Galifianakis) on the way he performed. The movie has a few moving moments about the relationship with a father, brothers, sisters. The movie was not filmed in Mexico, the impressive Ca?on del Sumidero (Sumidero Canyon) located in Chiapas state is CGI in the movie and the mexican town in the movie San Miguel de Allende sadly shows the "poor" mexican people wearing hats and riding burros (watch the movie "Nosotros los Nobles" which also shows a little the side of wealthy mexicans). Another Hollywood misrepresentation of who/how mexicans really are/live.There are about 5 movies that show mostly real mexican ambience (language, accent, music, etc "Traffic" -even though Benicio del Toro is not mexican, he does a pretty good job acting as a mexican-, the "Sicario" movies and "Coco". The rest show a wrong portrait of mexicans, their way of life, their music -movies usually use spanish music or latin american music instead of mexican music and their language. Many people don′t know this but the great actor Al Pacino was ironically praised by one of his worst performances ever in "Scarface" where he talks in an awfully wrong accent (real cubans -which are also Americans- Do Not talk the way he does in the movie). These things are only notticed if you really know the true mexican/latin american way of life. This movie is fun to watch putting aside those annoying geographical mistakes. Learn some Real Geography though.

Half-comedy, half-dramaReviewed bytrinaboiceVote: 6/10

IN A NUTSHELL:Directed by Luke Greenfield, this comedic bromance movie is about a road trip with two guys, one in America and the other in Mexico, who didn't know each other existed. Personally, I have a half brother, but I definitely know he exists. The movie looks at that nuanced relationship in a fairly effective way mixed with some humor and lots of drama.

Thank you to Focus Features for inviting me to the virtual screener so I could watch this and give you the scoop. I wouldn't race out to the theater to see this if I were you, but it's entertaining enough that you might want to check it out when it goes to streaming, which should be pretty soon after its theatrical release.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:A father lets his son drink beer.Subtitles in SpanishSome profanity in Spanish.Name-calling

THEMES:Immigration policies that tear families apartFamily, parenting, brotherhood, siblings"Always try to see things from a different perspective." - EvaristoEntitled AmericansInfidelityDon't give up on people.EmpathyRegretsConnectionThere's nothing wrong with being different.USA/Mexico strained relationsChoices and consequences

THINGS I LIKED:The half brothers are played by Luis Gerardo Mendez and Connor Del Rio. They really do look like they could be half-brothers! They also looked like they had a blast making the movie. The cast also includes Jose Zuniga and many other actors unfamiliar to most American audiences. The goat is completely unnecessary but pretty hilarious.I liked the mystery of following the clues that Evaristo, the dad, left for his sons. The pacing is pretty good with a new clue in the mystery leading us along.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:As a comedy, it's not as funny as I had hoped or as the movie poster suggests. As a drama, I never shed a tear or got the feels in a significant way.The plot felt pretty forced. We've seen this type of story before, so the ending is very predictable. The backstory feels like a telenovela. There are a few running gags throughout the film and are supposed to be funny, but they kind of fall flat.Multi-cultural stereotypes. It's hard to sympathize with or even like the father after he has abandoned both of his sons and traumatized their childhood.
