The Reviews for Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge (1989) 1080p

Phantom of the Opera meets average 80's slasherReviewed byStevieboy666Vote: 5/10

A re-imagining of the famous story "Phantom of the Opera" only this version is set in a new American shopping mall. Young Eric is burnt in an arson attack on his home and presumed dead, his girlfriend Melody survives and goes on to get a job in the mall that was built on the site of Eric's former home. Eric secretly lives in the mall and seeks revenge on those who left him for dead, plus he is still in love with his former girlfriend. The plot is OK but there are many questions such as where has Eric been between the fire and the building of the mall? How can he live in the mall with his many gadgets without being discovered? How did he manage to get hold of a deadly cobra snake? Etc. As a slasher movie there are plenty of kills, most are imaginative but sadly the DVD that I have is very poor quality and the dark picture means it isn't easy to see what is happening (a newly restored Blu-ray would be far better). I didn't care too much for the characters, there is no mystery as to the phantom's identity and I found a character called Buzz really annoying. However Ken Foree plays one of the security guards and I always enjoy watching him. The deaths are not overly gory, we do get a few boob shots (including an obvious body double for Melody) and there are plenty of stunts including Eric doing martial arts. Like in the classic story there is an unmasking scene in which Melody removes Eric's mask revealing his badly scared face (and he his voice has changed too to a silly tone). My DVD sleeve boasts a multi million dollar budget but it doesn't look it, this move is pretty average.

A perfect melding of Phantom of the Opera and The WraithReviewed byscurvydog84Vote: 7/10

One of the cornerstones of low-budget cinema is taking a well-known, classic storyline and making a complete bastardization out of it. Phantom of the Mall is no exception to this rule. The screenwriter takes the enduring Phantom of the Opera storyline and moves it into a late '80s shopping mall. However, the "Phantom's" goal now is simply to get revenge upon those responsible for disfiguring his face and murdering his family. The special effects do provide a good chuckle, especially when body parts begin appearing in dishes from the yogurt stand. Pauly Shore has a small role which does not allow him to be as fully obnoxious as one would expect, mostly due to the fact that his fifteen minutes of MTV fame had not yet arrived. If you're looking for a few good laughs at the expense of the actors and special effects crew, check this flick out. Otherwise, keep on looking for something else.

Young woman still upset over the mysterious death of her boyfriend takes a job at a brand new mall. However, it appears a secret admirer is watching over her and making sure nothing bad happens to her. Is it her supposedly dead boyfriend. Good premise given cheap, cliched treatment. Poor special effects to boot! Morgan Fairchild tries to inject some class into this, but even she can't save this mess.

Rated R; Sexual Situations, Nudity, Violence, and Profanity.
