Sacrifice is the story of consultant surgeon, Tora Hamilton, who moves with her husband, Duncan, to the remote Shetland Islands, 100 miles off the north-east coast of Scotland. Deep in the peat soil around her new home, Tora discovers the body of a young woman with rune marks carved into her skin and a gaping hole where her heart once beat. SACRIFICE is a horror film that doesn't want to be a horror film.Instead it would rather be a mature police procedural thriller, withlots of mystery aspects, but there's no getting away from the fact thatthe narrative is rooted in folk horror no matter how much the writerand director try to distance themselves from the genre.

The storyline is about an American doctor who goes to live on theShetland islands with her husband and soon discovers a body missing aheart. It all points to sinister conspiracies and sacrifice, and she'ssoon up to her neck in danger. The film is beautifully shot - inIreland for the most part - with lots of welcome outdoor locationphotography, and the plot feels like an episode of SILENT WITNESS withhints of THE WICKER MAN.

A shame, then, that the central detective story is so restrained andpredictable. Radha Mitchell is a good actress, and she has a bit ofcharm here, but otherwise the it all feels very routine and difficultto get excited about. I liked seeing Ian McElhinney (GAME OF THRONES)in support but the rest of the cast are pretty boring, and thingsresolutely play out in the most predictable way imaginable.

Beautifully shot, a great film to watch on a dark and stormy day athome all cuddled up. It's never super slow either, though from thebeginning I prepared myself for some longer more slower parts but thatdefinitely didn't happen. I love this lead actress! I truly believe sheis intelligent and a Doctor whereas many actresses who play Doctors donot convince me and then I find myself distracted and unable to focuson the story. I could guess what was going on but I still wanted tokeep watching because I was connected to the main characters.Satisfying ending with this film. It is worth the rental for sure.Afterward I felt like I'd been in Scotland/Ireland all weekend.

Unable to conceive, Dr. Tora Hamilton (Radha Mitchell) moves from theU.S. to the Shetland Isles where she and her husband intend to adopt achild. What Tora doesn't realise is that any character in a horrormovie who visits a remote Scottish island where the locals are a bitshifty is destined to fall foul of a pagan cult still practisingancient rituals.

Part The Wicker Man (obvs), part Silent Witness, this mediocrehorror/thriller never surprises, from Tora's fraught with dangerinvestigation of the corpse she unearths while burying a horse (it'sokay… it's dead!), right down to the cliff-top finale that sees themain bad guy giving our heroine more than one chance to do him in(which she does). Everything plays out exactly as one would expect.

Had writer/director Peter A. Dowling pushed the envelope a bitmore—taken a few more risks—this could have been a far more effectiveflick; as it stands, it feels a bit like a made-for-TVmovie-of-the-week.
