The Reviews for Stonehearst Asylum (2014) 720p

Well worth the time!Reviewed bylkrlVote: 8/10

Wonderful! I implore you to ride this little tale to the very end, and enjoy it all the way there for what it is! This film enjoys itself and provides the intrigue needed to keep you in the game. Don't judge it too early--a fine cast, well written, solid cinematography and score. I read someone else say at points, he wanted to laugh out loud, and indeed, do so. Not every film has to be a '10' to be enjoyable. Mystery, builds, shallows, it is very Poe--and that alone should tell you plenty. Have some fun and don't be too hard on it. I'm sure the fine cast involved had the grandest time making it! Don't read any spoilers or any reviews other than to know if it is your genre', while I value the opines of others, they can taint your own perception. I liked it very much! ;)

Surprisingly smart movie. My eyes were glued to the screen. I wanted towatch it again right after I saw it. It has a bit of a "Shutter Island"feel to it, however the only things similar are Ben Kingsley, a Mentalinstitution, suspense, spoilers, a script and story that keeps youpleasantly confused, and solid acting. I was unsure whether or not Iwanted to watch this movie because of middle-of-the-road reviews. I'm aserious film freak, and maybe I disagree with critics on movies withstyle and substance that are THIS original. I gave movies like "CloudAtlas," "Snowpiercer," "Inception," 9 of 10 ☆s. If you love uniquefilms with plot twists, you'll like "Stonehearst Asylum!"

Stonehearst Asylum is an interesting, but not completely satisfactory, thrillerReviewed byArgemalucoVote: 7/10

I don't know why director Brad Anderson hasn't received more recognition or popularity. Films like Session 9, The Machinist and The Call prove the fact he's talented; but for some reason, he is kept as a cult figure, modestly working on TV and independent productions. Maybe, that's a decision Anderson made to keep himself away from Hollywood. In his most recent film, Stonehearst Asylum, we can appreciate his solid work as a director once more, but the screenplay of the film isn't totally satisfactory. The plot and execution of Stonehearst Asylum evoke the cinema from Amicus and Hammer Films made in the '60s, even though it isn't a horror film, but a psychological (psychiatric?) thriller in which the clinical focuses from two doctors who want to help their patients in two different ways compete. The young and idealist Newgate is in favor of traditional techniques, which are occasionally cruel but necessary, while Dr. Lamb brings an absolute freedom to the patients, despite the fact of some of them being very dangerous, because he thinks that universal healing consists on restoring the dignity stolen by the horrible conditions of the asylum. Which one of both is right? That interesting disjunctive is left on the background when a revelation alters the road of the story and neutralizes the ideological battle which was impulsing it. Unfortunately, that decision reduces the potential of the story and damages the flow of the narrative, making it much more predictable and traditional. Nevertheless, there are various positive elements in Stonehearst Asylum, such as the excellent performances from Jim Sturgess, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine, Brendan Gleeson and David Thewlis. Tom Yatsko's cinematography displays warm colors and deep chiaroscuro in order to evoke the extremes of lucidity and mania from the characters. In conclusion, Stonehearst Asylum is an entertaining film, but its screenplay takes some unnecessary tangents, and the ending feels corny and convenient.
