The Reviews for Upgrade (2018) 1080p

What do you get when you mix Robocop with John Wick... this movie I thinkReviewed byhauntedforestVote: 7/10

Went to go see this movie a few days ago, not knowing anything about it. Looking at the poster it seemed like a sci-fi /horror?? movie about a cyborg. Not man. Not machine. More. I just figured it was something like the Terminator or Robocop, so why not? Also I really enjoy Blumhouse movies in general. They've really cornered the horror genre market in recent years. Even though this is pretty much sci-fi. A really dark one, with some humorous moments at times.

Just hoping that this movie would be decent, and turns out it was. In fact I was very impressed with it. The storyline drew me in, even if the themes in it aren't all that new. The concept of upgrading yourself with machines, and computers is such a fascinating concept. I also like the fact that it's in the future, but feels very believable. Like it's not too far away from the world we'll be living in one day. It's a pretty small budget for a movie of this sort, but at no point did it feel cheap. It's all about execution. And this movie has plenty of it. Both in how well made it is, and how brutal it is sometimes. Like literally we see a guy get his head blown off with his own arm/hand implanted with a shotgun? I didn't NEED to see it, but there it is. Actually I was a little surprised at all the stark violence in the movie. At times it happens so suddenly, and violently. You sit there wondering for a moment what just happened. Gratuitous even, but this is an R rated movie.

As for the acting, it was fine. Logan Marshall-Green, never heard of him before. I thought he stood out. He gives a believable measured performance, while not going overboard with the pathos. Well not too much anyway, but for the most part he was great. Definitely someone to watch out for with the right project. The supporting cast was good as well, but didn't feel like they were in it too much. Pretty much this movie revolves around him and STEM. The robot voice in his head- or rather a sentient computer chip that helps him walk and do other things. And by things I mean he turns himself into some cyborg Bruce Lee with precision moves. The digital sound effects when he lets STEM take over fighting are sort've funny.

Overall I would say this is your standard revenge movie, but the setting and presentation is what makes it a little different. I have no problems with the script as this isn't Oscar caliber material. Though in saying that, it doesn't do the movie justice. The story drew me in, and I was entertained. Sure it borrows from other movies, and you can clearly see the influences. Blade Runner, Robocop, Terminator, it's all there. Even so, I like the world that they created, and it does what it's set out to do. Be good entertainment, and make you think a little. Those are the best kinds of movies.

I simply loved it...Reviewed byScott A. BrewerVote: 9/10

A Darkhorse underdog movie. Very disappointed movies like this don't get as much exposure as They should.Well written, polished. Great understanding using special effects to compliment not dominate.Would Definitely go see a Sequal.

A long Black Mirror EpisodeReviewed bymsgobbajrVote: 8/10

Through and through this movie felt like a longer episode of black mirror. The production was higher and the cinematography was really cool. I could see how the stabilization lock on his head during fight scenes could make some people dizzy, but I thought it was a unique way of doing things. Some of the acting was sub-par during the casual interactions, but I thought the plot and action made up for it. It's thought provoking in the way Black Mirror is and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys that content and doesn't mind gore.
