The Reviews for Upgrade (2018) 1080p

What do you get when you mix Robocop with John Wick... this movie I thinkReviewed byhauntedforestVote: 7/10

Went to go see this movie a few days ago, not knowing anything about it. Looking at the poster it seemed like a sci-fi /horror?? movie about a cyborg. Not man. Not machine. More. I just figured it was something like the Terminator or Robocop, so why not? Also I really enjoy Blumhouse movies in general. They've really cornered the horror genre market in recent years. Even though this is pretty much sci-fi. A really dark one, with some humorous moments at times.

Just hoping that this movie would be decent, and turns out it was. In fact I was very impressed with it. The storyline drew me in, even if the themes in it aren't all that new. The concept of upgrading yourself with machines, and computers is such a fascinating concept. I also like the fact that it's in the future, but feels very believable. Like it's not too far away from the world we'll be living in one day. It's a pretty small budget for a movie of this sort, but at no point did it feel cheap. It's all about execution. And this movie has plenty of it. Both in how well made it is, and how brutal it is sometimes. Like literally we see a guy get his head blown off with his own arm/hand implanted with a shotgun? I didn't NEED to see it, but there it is. Actually I was a little surprised at all the stark violence in the movie. At times it happens so suddenly, and violently. You sit there wondering for a moment what just happened. Gratuitous even, but this is an R rated movie.

As for the acting, it was fine. Logan Marshall-Green, never heard of him before. I thought he stood out. He gives a believable measured performance, while not going overboard with the pathos. Well not too much anyway, but for the most part he was great. Definitely someone to watch out for with the right project. The supporting cast was good as well, but didn't feel like they were in it too much. Pretty much this movie revolves around him and STEM. The robot voice in his head- or rather a sentient computer chip that helps him walk and do other things. And by things I mean he turns himself into some cyborg Bruce Lee with precision moves. The digital sound effects when he lets STEM take over fighting are sort've funny.

Overall I would say this is your standard revenge movie, but the setting and presentation is what makes it a little different. I have no problems with the script as this isn't Oscar caliber material. Though in saying that, it doesn't do the movie justice. The story drew me in, and I was entertained. Sure it borrows from other movies, and you can clearly see the influences. Blade Runner, Robocop, Terminator, it's all there. Even so, I like the world that they created, and it does what it's set out to do. Be good entertainment, and make you think a little. Those are the best kinds of movies.

Well worth the price of a ticketReviewed bywadler345Vote: 9/10

I went into this with fairly low expectations. The trailer looked good, and the cinematography looked exciting. But the premise seemed tired and worn.

*in a deep, movie-voice over voice* some guys kill his wife, and now he's seeking revenge".

But this film surpassed my expectations, and was a well-worth experience. Not only was I correct about the cinematography being exciting and engaging, but the plot actually strung together compelling way. This film came out of nowhere for me, and now, it's a memorable film that accomplishes the most important goal of any great film: gets the audience to keep wondering about it.

Since I don't want to go into spoilers, I'll say one last thing: pay attention to the Foley artist's work. The sound design is poignant and additive to the experience. It reminds me of the clever usage of music from Baby Driver. Nothing is wasted and is always enriching of the world building. With Baby Driver, the music was giving us Baby's personal experience. Here, the sound effects give us Grey's point of view. Didn't experiences, but both are elevated through sound, masterfully.

I genuinely want to see it again. If the trailer interested you at all, go see it. It's worth your while.

Now This Is How You Make A Low Budget MovieReviewed byDarkwalker173Vote: 9/10

I went into this movie having no clue what it was about and wasn't expecting much, but I loved it.There are innumerable movies with huge budgets that simply fall flat, and Upgrade, with a Budget of around $5,000,000, which doesn't cover the cost of catering on some of these huge budgeted flops, honestly looked like it cost a lot more than it actually did. Intelligent script, good action, very few unnecessary scenes, and though I thought it was sure to let me down, a very good ending. And although I have seen much of Logan Marshall-Green's work and was never a huge fan, he does a very good job here.Recommended.
