Ex-boxer Zack (Alex Meraz), talented MMA fighter Tim (Todd Duffee), bullied record store clerk Justin (Scott Epstein) and wrestler Mike (Dean Geyer) come from various backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common: a passion for the "savage science" and quickly become loyal to their unorthodox trainer, Case (Michael Jai White), a brilliant ex-UFC Champion down on his own luck. Teaching them about much more than fighting, Case prepares the young men for a competition called the Beatdown, run by local college kid and fight impresario Max (Evan Peters). When their mentor gets set up by some bad cops, the young men band together to root out a traitor in their midst.

"An angry mind is a narrow mind." Four teenagers who need an outletbegin to train with ex-UFC fighter Case (White). After one of thembetrays the group it is up to the other three to get revenge at the"Beatdown." After liking the first one more then I thought I would Iwas looking forward to this one. While I did like this movie it wasmore of a remake then a sequel. Instead of the main characters daddying he leaves his mom. Instead of the trainer getting in a fight withhis brother and living alone he has a run in with the law...and livesalone. The main character liking a fellow fighters girl is in this one, along with a line about Kurt Cobain. There really is not much differentin this movie, except the fighting is more professional. Saying allthat though, I did like this movie. Overall, a near replica of thefirst one. If you liked that one you will like this one. I give it a B.

Would I watch again? - I don't know, maybe.

After watching the first movie, Never Back Down, I was extremely excited to see this movie.

That's about all the excitement that I had was the anticipation...

The acting is terrible, the lines are cheesy, and the movie is extremely predictable.

The only up to this film is that it made itself into a comedy for me and my friends to have jokes about for a couple weeks and to mock.

I was surprisingly disappointed by this one and would never think to watch it again. There is too much wrong in this film and they completely destroyed the reputation of the first movie as much as I had enjoyed that one.

I never saw NEVER BACK DOWN, but this sequel features Michael Jai Whiteso it was a must see for me. Four kids from varied backgrounds gettraining advice from down-on-his-luck former MMA star and now ex-conCase Walker (White). You have Tim (former UFC fighter Todd Duffee), acollege student trying to help make ends meet for his single mom; Zack(Alex Meraz), a former boxer who just had a humiliating loss thatresulted in a career ending eye injury; Justin (Scottie Epstein), thecomic book geek looking to get revenge on the guys who beat him up; andMike (Dean Geyer), a college freshman wrestler who falls for Zack'sgirl and is dealing with the fact that his father left his mom foranother man (really!). Can you guess which character ends up goingrogue and using his violent tools for bad? They all learn how toenhance their previous skills (boxing, wrestling) in order to becomewell-rounded mixed martial artists for the upcoming Beatdown showproduced by Max (Evan Peters, apparently the only connection to thefirst film).

Heading direct-to-video, this sequel apparently hits all the same notesas the first film. The drama, for the most part, is very standardstuff, although I did find Case's personal history to be well down. Inaddition to the lead role as the trainer, Jai White also made hisdirectorial debut here. The man definitely knows his martial arts andshould be commended for not only the (mostly) realistic action andtraining, but also imparting some wisdom in terms of the discipline'smental aspects (watch for a funny bit where he quotes Bruce Lee). Heseems to have learned a lot from directors like Isaac Florentine anddoesn't cheat during the brawls. It also helps that he had Epstein, whois a black belt in jiu-jitsu, and Eddie Bravo, former UFC commentatorand inventor of the rubber guard at 10th Planet, serving as technicalconsultants for the fights. Of course, you have to take the good withthe bad and there are also some more "cinematic" fights. White also hasa bizarre love for montages featuring the blandest of generic white boyrock. The acting is pretty good all-around, with surprisingly strongperformances from martial artists Epstein and Duffee. I say that afternearly two decades of watching MMA fighters embarrass themselves onfilm. Look for current UFC light heavyweight Lyoto Machida in a smallrole as himself.
